Encodes the only ClpP (caseinolytic protease) encoded within the plastid genome. Contains a highly conserved catalytic triad of Ser-type proteases (Ser-His-Asp). Part of the 350 kDa chloroplast Clp complex. The name reflects nomenclature described in Adam et. al (2001).
