AGO9-dependent sRNA silencing is crucial to specify cell fate in the Arabidopsis ovule. AGO9 is expressed in reproductive companion cells but not in the associated male or female gametes or their precursors. Therefore, AGO9 acts non-cell autonomously to silencing the activity of TEs activity in the female gametophyte.
