Encodes an integral plasma membrane protein. Functionally complements the yeast mid1 mutant, a deficiency of Ca2+ influx. Involved in Ca2+ influx and mechanical sensing in roots. An over-expression line showed increased Ca2+ uptake than the wild type plant. The primary root of a knock-out mutant failed to penetrate a harder agar medium from a softer medium.
